Nar Phu Teri La Upper Mustang Trek

Fly into Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to rest after a long journey. In the evening, your trekking guide will meet you for the welcome dinner, where you will be briefed on the trek itinerary. Kathmandu, with its historic temples and crowded streets, is culturally immersive.

We're starting the morning with the scenic overland drive from Kathmandu to Koto, which is a small village located at the entrance to the Nar Phu Valley. It is an 8 to 10 hours drive through beautiful villages and terraced fields and forests. Arriving in Koto, get ready for the following day trek.

Today we begin our trek into the Nar Phu Valley. From Koto, we take a gradual trail through pine forests and small villages. The path offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and takes us to the village of Meta, where we pause to eat. Afterwards, we cross a number of suspension bridges and narrow trails along the river, until we reach Dharmashala, where we will camp for the night. Dharmashala is widely known for its tranquil setting and stunning views of the neighbouring peaks.

This is a fairly easy day of trekking, but do pace yourself as we begin to gain altitude. As we go further into the more isolated and desert section of the Nar Phu Valley, the landscape surrounding us begins to change.

This day's trek is comparatively tough as you are ascending to a higher elevation, and thus you should keep pace and take adequate rest during the hike. There are beautiful rocky terrain and Tibetan-style architecture of this region’s settlements on the way.

Nar Village is one of the highest villages in the valley and is widely popular for its traditional culture, rich history, and spectacular views. Upon arrival, you’ll have the chance to explore the village, meet the locals and relax ahead of the next day’s trekking.

Today’s walk continues from Nar Village to Ngawal, located in the Annapurna Conservation Area. The trail is also more difficult, featuring some very steep climbs and descents, but the views of the Annapurna range are among the most magnificent in the world. When we are driving through high-altitude pastures we usually see yaks and other animals grazing on the fields.

Ngawal is a lovely village and we will spend the night in a teahouse in view of the great mountains of the Annapurna range. Lisona is a typical village, giving you a peek of life in the region. Beautiful views around here on the peaks.

Today is an exciting one as we drop down to the famous village of Manang. As the journey takes you through stunning forests and fields of barley while gazing at the Annapurna and Gangapurna peaks ahead. Manang is a popular place for trekkers, with plenty of accommodations and amenities. It is also a perfect spot for acclimatization, which is important as we get started with our trek to high altitudes.

Once arriving in Manang, spend the afternoon resting, visiting the village or working up a sweat with a short hike nearby. Manang is also a hot spot for trekkers and climbers, so it’s a good time to mingle with fellow adventurers and get tips about others’ experiences in the Himalayas.

We begin our journey on our way to Khangsar, a small village at the base of the Annapurna hills, after a rest day in Manang. Manang to Khangsar: The trail from Manang to Khangsar takes us through stunning terrain, including rocky plains and traditional villages. Tiny Khangsar is a quiet escape, the perfect overnight stop. And its beautiful atmosphere and nicely preserved culture.

It’s a relatively moderate trek for the day, giving you time to absorb the mountain views and rest up for what’s to come in the days ahead.

This is one of the most exhilarating days of trekking, as we head toward Lo Manthang, the capital of the Mustang region. Lo Manthang, a walled city untouched by much of the modern world. Home to some of the most distinct Tibetan Buddhist culture in a country filled with it, its monasteries and buildings have very deep roots.

Today’s trek has a handful of passes and rugged elements. Upon reaching Lo Manthang, we have opportunity to explore the walled city and backs of ancient monasteries. The views of the surrounding desert landscape and snowcapped peaks are magnificent.

For our first day in Lo Manthang, we will take a rest day to acclimatize to the altitude and also explore a bit as well. The district is well known for traditional Tibetan architecture, ancient monasteries, and its vibrant Buddhist culture. You can go to the monasteries, the royal palace and other historical places around town. It’s also a lovely way to get to know local people and understand how they live.

This will be a rest day for your body as we make our way up toward the higher altitudes. “We’ll take the day slowly but don’t forget to appreciate the incredible beauty of the Mustang region.

Our retracing the trail is a walk between Lo Manthang and Dhi, with a route that takes turns between impressive condensed Alladin like villages and then just wide open barren land. The hike is not as strenuous as some of the earlier stages, but it provides an opportunity to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the area. Dhi is a serene village with breathtaking mountain views that offer the perfect escape.

Today, we walk back toward Nar Village. As we climb again, we’re rewarded with stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, ancient Tibetan villages and alpine pastures. The trail is relatively well-maintained, although it can be strenuous at times due to the altitude. After Nar Village, we will be rewarded quiet, peaceful environment.

On this day, we walk back to Koto, this time following our footsteps through the isolated and striking Nar Phu Valley. It is a lengthy downward spiral giving one a moment for reflection on the journey thus far. After reaching Koto will spend a night and get ready for the drive back to Kathmandu the next day.

We drive back to Kathmandu after breakfast to reminisce about our incredible adventure. It is a bit of a journey, through lush mountainous countryside, but this is a great opportunity to be appreciative of the views and other smaller towns and villages along the way.

Today is your departure day. Unless your flight is at the crack of dawn, you have free time to shop or sight-see. We’ll make sure you get to the airport for your return flight home.
