Langtang Valley Trek – 10 Days

Fly into Kathmandu, and be received by our staff and be transferred to your hotel. They will hold a briefing session in the afternoon all about the trek, after you have free time to get to know the city. Visit the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) or Boudhanath Stupa or just relax and adjust to a new environment.

Tips for Day 1:

• Hydrate and try to acclimate to the altitude.
• Travel light during your city tour of Kathmandu, since you will want to save all your energy for the coming trek.
• You will need your passport and necessary documentation for the trekking briefing session.

After breakfast, we depart from Kathmandu for a picturesque drive to Syabrubesi (1,460 meters), the starting point for the Langtang Valley trek. The drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara takes about 7-8 hours and passes through lush rolling hills, terraced fields and small villages. In Syabrubesi, we will check into our lodge for an overnight stay.

Tips for Day 2:

• Be sure to take snacks and water for the drive, which can be long.
• Expect a bumpy ride — the route can get rough.
• Make sure to take regular breaks during the drives to stretch your legs and avoid getting tired.

Today, we begin the trek as we hike from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel. The best part of trekking through dense forests, where we will be passing several villages. The Route takes you through dense rhododendron and bamboo forests, with spectacular views of the Langtang River and the surrounding mountains. We will cross several suspension bridges and pass waterfalls until we arrive at our overnight stop, Lama Hotel, at 2,480 meters. This day is not quite as rigorous with respect to altitude gain and is a good way to settle into the trek.

The region is famed for its serenity, and after long walks in the hills, hospitable teahouses will provide ample comfort. You need to be well rested and have plenty of fluids to get you through the next few days.

Tips for Day 3:

• If starting to feel the altitude, walk at normal pace.
• Keep valuables on your person, as this is remote country and locals can be welcoming but also wary.
• Keep your camera at the ready to capture those stunning sunrise shots along the way.

We resume our trek to Langtang Village from the Lama Hotel. Today’s travel is not very long and it yields extreme transformations in scenery. The trail ascends through verdant landscape with glimpses of terraced fields and traditional Tamang settlements. Higher up, the views open up spectacularly to reveal breathtaking mountain views, including the impressive bulk of Langtang Lirung (7,227 meters) rising above the valley.

One of the last settlement found in the valley and situated at 3,430 meters, you will get great views of the surroundings peaks from Langtang Village. After a good trek, we will stop overnight at one of the local teahouses serving some local food and getting to converse with the villagers, which are primarily belonging to the Tamang people. They are famous for hospitality and diverse culture.

Tips for Day 4:

• Take it slow the altitude will start to limit your breathing.
• Stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness.
• Interact with the community to find out a bit more about the culture of the area.

After breakfast, we walk towards Kyanjin Gompa, a sacred Buddhist monastery situated at 3800 meters. Great views of the Langtang mountain glum can be seen along this part of the trek. The ground gets more rocky as we continue to ascend; I find the unspoilt nature beautiful.

Along the way you will pass traditional yak pastures, and may even spot the docile creatures grazing in the alpine meadows. Once you get to Kyanjin Gompa, you will be able to visit the monastery that has been a spiritual center for locals for centuries. You’ll also have the option to check out a cheese factory nearby, where the famous Langtang cheese is produced using the milk from the local yaks.

You’ll spend the night at a teahouse in Kyanjin, giving you an opportunity to rest and acclimate to the higher altitude.

Tips for Day 5:

• Be sure to drink enough, especially at altitude.
• Take frequent breaks to avoid the effects of altitude.
• Go to the monastery and find peace.

Another acclimatization day today at Kyanjin Gompa. Acclimatization is vital on high-altitude treks, and we use this day for your body to acclimatize to the thin air. For unbelievable views of the surrounding peaks, including Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, and the Ganesh Himal range, you can take an optional hike up to Tsergo Ri (5,000 meters).

It is quite a steep but worthy climb to Tsergo Ri. You will love to enjoy the view of the below valley, with the glinting glaciers and deep valleys. You’ll head back to Kyanjin Gompa to recover from the hike. Otherwise you can relax and walk around the village or visit the local cheese factory.

Tips for Day 6:

• If you are going to trek to Tsergo Ri, you will need to wear layers of clothes to handle the changing temperatures.
• “Listen to your body and don’t overdo it on this acclimatization day.
• Drink water and enjoy the views.

Following a much-deserved rest day at Kyanjin Gompa, we set off back down the Langtang Valley on the trail we hiked up. The drop to Lama Hotel is considerably quicker, and the trail provides a different view of the mountains, as you'll be walking downhill in the woodland trails. We'll also pass through the villages of Langtang and Ghoda Tabela, and we'll take our time to soak in the peaceful setting.

The descent makes this day generally easier, but just as with every day, be careful where you step on the uneven terrain. When we arrive at Lama hotel, you will be the little accomplished and a little relaxed after the downhill trail.

Tips for Day 7:

• Be careful going down because it is very hard on your knees.
• Spend some time taking in the natural beauty and taking pictures of the valley below.
• So stay slow pace to avoid tire.

Now it is the last stage of the journey as we return to Syabrubesi. The trail is primarily downhill, but it can be strenuous because the path is uneven. You will also have time to ponder the wonderful journey you did whilst walking through forests and village. The views keep stunning as we approach the village, where we’ll spend the night at a local teahouse.

In Syabrubesi, you can celebrate with your companions over the trek while recounting the tales of your journey and the hurdles cleaned behind.

Tips for Day 8:

• Take a moment to enjoy these last moments on the trail.
• The long descent can be tough on your joints and muscles.
• Once back in Syabrubesi, feast on the local delicacies.

We spend another night resting in Syabrubesi before driving back to Kathmandu. A drive of 7-8 hours will provide a last view of rural Nepal as we are driving through small towns, terraced fields, and forest. On landing at Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to unwind or tour the capital city, taking in the flavor of this dynamic metropolis.

Tips for Day 9:

• Be sure to pack early and avoid those last-minute crunch.
• So, be sure to have your camera ready on the way back for the beautiful countryside.
• You will finally reach Kathmandu, enjoy a hearty meal and rest.
